if i'm just starting to ride, should i go w/ english tack or western tack?
Why don’t you try both and see what you like :p

first decide what type of riding you will be wanting to do and go with the tack thats best suited for that. and if you're just doing trail or pleasure riding then try both and figure out which one you like the best. most beginners tend to choose the western saddle because it feels more secure when you're first starting out. but it's really just personal preference. hope i helped :)

You should start out western. it is much easier to sit in the saddle being a first timer. Then as you get better you can try english and see what you like. =]

Personally I went with English from and earlier point. However there are several different styles of each saddle type. As an example.
Western:
Roping
Cutting
Barrel Racing
English:
Dressage (cutback)
Jumping
etc.
Your best bet is to get in with a local shop and try out the different saddle types or mooch off your friends :-) Everybody has a preference and a diffferent rear.
