From January 27- February 3, 2008, New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program is holding an online All Breed Stallion Season Auction to raise funds for our cause. New Vocations is a 501 (c) 3 public equine charity that adopted over 300 retired Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses to carefully screened and closely monitored homes in 2007. For more information about us or the auction, please visit www.horseadoption.com. For questions, contact Carrie at updates@horseadoption.com

Glad to see such an organization exists. What type of temperment prescreening do you do on the horses to insure that you get good fits for the homes that they are going too.

Also do you do any barn and pasture checks prior to placing the animals and what are the keys we should look for in qualifying?

We require that all interested in adopting fill out an application and pay a $10 application fee. This application asks questions regarding experience, facility specifics and requires several references including from a vet and farrier. The process generally takes 2 weeks to finish. Approved adopters are then welcome to visit our facility and see the horses that they are interested ridden by our trainer. We do not allow adopters to ride the horses for insurance reasons. We then track our adopted horses for a year, requiring 2 updates throughout the year. Most of our adopters continue to update us even after the term of the contract.

Our horses are evaluated several times. Physically, checking all feet, and confirmation aspects, as well as in turnout, on a lounge line as well as under saddle. Our horses are not "in training" they are only evaluated to find what person/ discipline would best suite them in their new lives. Every one of our horses get daily handling, so we get to know them pretty well.

Awesome news where is your facility located. I am in the state of SC and would possibly be interested and if not myself then for sure one of my friends.

We have an old farm with about 365 acres and 25 head of cattle.
