I bought a 10 or 11 year old warmblood gelding last year. He was sold to me as an Oldenburg but he does not have any registration or pedigree papers. He does however have a brand on his left hindquarters. It is very hard to read but I think it might say "1997" (maybe the year he was born?) My question is, where would I start looking for his pedigree? Is there a way to track down where he is from or if he has been registered by his brand? Any opionons or help would be appreciated!

Hi and welcome!

Are you in America or Europe?

maybe the best place to start for his history is with the previous owners. Were they able to give you any information or know of who bred him?

Can you post a photo of the brand?

It maybe a long shot but you could always type in your horses name into this website, this will bring up his pedigree if someone in his past has done it.

If not then I would contact the Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society and see if they know what his brand is. Their link is:

Good luck! Let us all know how you go :D

The previous owners are going to be critical unless they put some sort of tatoo on the horse. I know that we have done this before, but then again it is impossible to know unless the breeders handled this for you.

this is very interesting. I have no advice but would love to hear about the outcome.

I'd like to know also what happened here. I've tried to purchase a horse before but owners tip-toed around pedigree paperwork. I ultimately pulled out of the deal, my gut told me to.
