Looking around the hooves I think the top of the hoof is important too. When I was younger we had a horse that got the area around the top of the hoof damaged in the fence.
Our vet had us wrap the foot and put salve on it. The cold eventually healed and the area healed.. However even 14 yrs later that horse still has a funny looking hoof with an indention that runs down the front.
I think our vet saved the ridability of the colt with the salve. Wish I could remember what it was.
