I am truly a novice- what is the English riding style?

At a quick glance, English riding is more traditional. Think of polo, jumping and hunting. Generally taller horses. Clothing is more fitted and formal. Also, no cowboy hats, wear more of a helmet style hat.

Ok here is a reference to a helmet and I had just asked a question about this in another section in the forum. is it appropriate to wear a helmet versus a cap when you are learning to ride? Is this ever done? Seems like safety would prevail here and the answer would be that it is fine to wear a helmet but I just do not know.

Helmets is the most important SAFETY ITEM for a rider to wear! I have seen many accidents, Heltmet will not only protects you, but will also safe your life!!!!! unfortunate! accident wont discriminate! it could happend at any time. TRUST ME!

Does not matter if you are a beginner or the most experience rider!!! you should at all times wear a Helmet when ridding! Please dont let anyone discourage you from wearing one!

A true Equine Professional will always wear one!

Great advice. So many riders get the the point where if they ever did wear one, they stop. It's like in SC where the don't require motorcycle riders to wear helmets wither. That's a hard one to overcome!

What? They don't require motorcyclist to wear helmets? That's absurd! Off track, I do recommend that a helmut is worn when riding. Why take an unnecessary chance.
