Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum. My 12 year old want us to buy a horse as we have just bought a sizable piece of property and now have the room. Any advice out there on this. I rode as a child myself but much has changed since then.

a first horse for a child should be well trained. the horse should train the child, not the other way around. Visit riding schools, farms, shows, etc to learn all you can.

Know what it is you want in your new horse. Riding, showing for maybe breeding in the future. Another important factor is the horses disposition. Is it alert with a good expression? Go with your gut on that. You'll do fine.

Hi and welcome to the forum :D
Get your 12 year old to have riding lessons first before buying a horse. A horse is a big investment and an ongoing investment in time and $, many kids lose interest quickly and you don't want an expensive lawn ornament sitting around.
If your child wants to continue then look at buying a horse. I agree a horse should be well trained but I disagree with the horse training your child. That is the job of a good instructor. A good first horse should keep your child out of trouble and be sensible but also challenge them...thats how they learn.
When I learnt to ride if I rode lazy or didn't give the correct signals to the horse they simply refused to respond.
You will find some good info on this site....I have been visiting for a while!
