Overall what is the best type of horse to learn to ride on? I am an adult and have never ridden before.

Not so much the type of horse but the dispostition and training of the horse you should be looking at. A good riding school will put you on a horse used to novice riders and can "go with the flow". Check your local schools.

I agree with Maggie :)
Find yourself a good riding school, go visit and check out the horses. Are they happy and healthy? Speak with the instructors & tell them what you want to do. See if you are comfortable with them and they listen to you. When you are learning to ride safety is so important when you are a beginner.
Try out a few different styles....western and/or english and see what you like.
A good riding school will teach you everything and really open your eyes to how much responsibility and time it takes to look after and own a horse....not to mention the $$
If the bug really bites and you fall head over heels with horse back riding then the school will have many contacts of good horses for sale depending on what you want to do.
Good luck and let us know how you go :D
