sedatives vs. tranquilizers

for some dental work, the vet needs to sedate my mare. he also mentioned tranquilizers. been reading up on and wondering the difference in tranquilizers and sedatives. are they the same? which is best?

i'm pretty sure the tranquilizers last a long long time. the sedatives are short acting and best for minor procedures. Standing examinations and procedures only require sedatives. That's how I understand them.

we recently had a good experience with dental work. our mare was given a sedative and she reacted great. i believe the tranquilizers are for surgeries or when she need to lay down
