Hi
Horses safety is number 1 priority with fencing. Wood is good but needs regular maintenence (painting, checking for nails sticking out or any splintered wood that can injure a horse). Depending on the horse they can also chew wood.
Metal fences are good but if a horse runs into it its not very forgiving and can injure them also. Both wood and metal need to be painted for high visibility.
I am not sure what a buck fence is....
If you like the look of a wooden fence you can always go for vinyl or a pvc fence. They last for ages, have the look of a classic wooden fence are strong and if a horse does run into it has the flexibility not to hurt them and dont require a huge deal of looking after.
Stay away from wire if you can as that is not highly visible to a horse, they can get tangled in it and requires checking regularly for repairs.

thanks for all the food for thought. definately had ruled out wire. Like the idea of the vinyl type, sure it will be price but in the long run may be worth it. seems like it is the safest for the horses.
