I would figure any good healing salve should help. I use a tea tree oil ointment for Hoover's cuts, Bill uses Corona Ointment and some sort of green paste I can't remember. Maybe some neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment. Just keep it clean and his natural healing should take over. Hoover tore himself on a trailer when I got him, sliced his face up good over his eye and on his cheek. I used the Corona on him at that time, and you can't tell he was ever cut anymore.

first defense is keeping the area clean and free of infection. there are many good creams on the market and you can even use your own neosporin or any other antibiotic ointment. did your horse get stitches? where is the cut?

you seem to be getting some great advice about preventing scars. i agree there are great ointments on the market. in a pinch, i've heard of using bacon grease. has anyone else heard of this, and does it work?

bacon grease for scars is pretty "old school" but effective. I agree with another poster that keeping the area clean and free of infection is essential in scar prevention. keep some good salve or ointments in your tack room so you can have it immediately when you notice a scratches and cuts.

On our horse, after the cut had been cleaned and healed over, I got some of my daughter's Mederma ointment (from her stitches from being brushed into a barbed wired fence while riding!). I couldn't see a mark on the nose after about 3 months. Dapped and rubbed in a little (I tried) about once a day.

I used plain vitamin E oil after it healed. I had a small neck cut. It healed her right up with out a mark.

Slightly different question. I was rubbing Hoover's neck, and noticed he has a divot missing from his muscle in the front section, I'm assuming an old scar. The hair looks normal over it, and he doesn't seem to have sensitivity with it. Any reason I should be concerned?
