was looking at selling a few horses to a neighbor. neighbor insisted horses were older than we thought. i know i'm right but what are some sure ways to determine the age of the horses. what do i look for in the teeth?

determining the age is generally done at a glance by inspection of the teeth. there are books and maybe a chart you could get from your vet to help you. Look for things like the "7 year hook". remember some horses can live upwards a good 35-40 years. 6 years is considered mature and over 10 is considered aged (but not old.)

How old do the neighbours think they are compared to what you believed?
If there is a big difference get the vet out to verify their age so that you know yourself. That way you can be certain. Older horses will need more care as well.
Sometime people if they know you are not experienced will just try and fool you to maybe get the horses at a cheaper price....so get the vet out and confirm their age.
That way you can negotiate a price based on their true age.
Good luck!
