my water trough is so disgusting to look at, we clean it with a sponge and water but are scared to put any cleaners in there (did it once with my fish tank and you can guess what happened next) Someone told me it was safe to use mild amounts of bleach and rinse thoroughly. anybody have any easy remedies?

I know what you mean. you must have a white plastic one like I do. Sometimes vinegar works for us. scrub it down with vinegar, then rinse well. At least the vinegar isn't a chemical cleaner in case it is lingering in the drinking water.

I'm always used good old elbow grease and a a scrub brush. Soaking it in warm water helps too. It's a nasty problem for me too.

With warmer weather already hitting here, I've seen a slime increase! I have to saw my elbows get a good workout too. I do turn them out and give a super wash at least once in month in peak hot season. I mean power wash with detergent, then a prolonged rinse, then rinse several more times!

What are your water troughs made out of?

Mine is an old fashioned enamel bathtub with the legs which i love as it has a plug and is easy to drain

I use a natural supermarket bought dishwashing liquid and a stiff brush. Once a month it gets drained and a good scrubbing and then rinsed well.

Bleach isnt good and if you are having bad problems then look at the vinegar option or look at moving the trough into a more shady area where it doesnt get as much sun.
