If a horse has been clipped in the winter, for show or whatever, it doesn't have a winter coat so they wear a blanket. Also in transporting to protect from cold and bugs and such.

Sometimes sick horses are blanketed to help with drafts and cold. Also after foaling a mare is sometimes blanketed.

are the horses near you with the blankets show horses? Many show horses have blankets to prevent the winter coat from coming in during wintertime. This is another explanation you may consider.

jackgirl just mentioned how show horses are kept from getting their winter coat. Remember if you blanket your horse for that reason you must keep it blanketed all winter. Winter coat takes much time to come in at the right time and you can't just uncover it. Keep on the blanket....

Just thought of another thing to remember. Please don't forget to change the blanket and clean often. Treat them you would changing clothes on your own children. Helps prevent disease and allows you to really inspect under blanket often. thanks
