Howdy! I have recently bought a ranch, and I want to use it for horse breeding...does anybody have suggestions on the types of most popular horses, and possible mixing of different breeds?

Gary, the question to ask is what purpose are you going to breed horses for? Are you looking to just breed for a good well rounded trail horse or are you looking to breed horses for showing or competition? Different breeds excel at different disciplines. If you are looking for a well rounded, happy horse then you can’t go past Quarter Horses :D

I would like to help you first things first if you are going to breed horses on your farm Quarter horses are fine but the world is full of them. But if you want quarter horses that are beautiful then cross your quarter horses with Arabians.Arabians are easy to train they have lots of intelligence, spirit, stamina and lots of beauty. Arabians bond with the people that have them quarter horses don't.

i disaggree with the above statement that "arabians bond with the people that have them quarter horses don't." you can bond with any horse. i've personally owned arabians, paints, thoroughbreds, quarter horses, ponies, donkeys, trahkehners and trotters. and trust me you can develope a bond with any breed of horse. how much you can bond with a horse really depends more on the individual horses personality more than it does their breed. some horses, like people, like to be alone or independent, while others love to be in large groups. some horses prefer people as company, and some prefer to be with other horses. it just depends on the horses personality. and every type can be found in every breed...not just arabians.

if you do not have a specific purpose for your horses other than you just want to breed horses, then i suggest just doing a little research and finding a breed of horse you are attracted to. maybe even visit a farm that breeds that breed of horse, and make sure you know what that breed is usually used for. just to make sure that is the horse you want to start with. after all you'll have a ranch full of them lol hope i helped and good luck deciding :)

I would take a look at what breeding farms are in your area. If there are a ton of quarter horse farms, go with something else. However, you need to do a ton of research to learn about breeding horses and such. Having someone knowledgable handy would definitely benefit you! Good luck!

Also you may want to take a look at a couple of farms in your area. There is no way that I would simply jump into horse husbandry without some basic courses or hands on experience.

Most owners are way more than happy to have your help for a month or two. Animals can be finnicky and raising horses in this manner can be even more so.

Be careful and enjoy. Horses are great companions and very enjoyable to own.

Personally I like my Quarter horses and paints.

Paints are good because you can bred a Paint Stallion to a TB mare and if the foal comes out solid in colour you have a paint bred foal but if the foal has colour (paint markings) it can be registered as a paint.

I dislike it when people breed and have no clue (no saying you don't have a clue) But Then there horses they've bred have bad conformation, Bronco's ect ect when you could go out buy some really nice horses who've had show experience are good under saddle and have great conformation then you breed them the foals that they throw will pass on the good temp (most of the time), conformation, showing potential ect ect, They'll be worth more money and people will be interested in them.

Think about the decisions you make and the horses you go to look at.
Quarter horses aren't only for racing and I for one would not get into the racing side of things, I'd keep with the pleasure, Showing ect ect mostly the horses are worth more (because how quiet they are, what there sire and dam have done ect).

But this is coming from my experience.
