I want that beautiful shiney coat. THe coats that you see at shows, but i want that for mine. Do you have to spend a ton on supplements and specialty products or can anyone attain that beautiful look...?

We supplement with raw flaxseed. I think it is what has boosted the shine in our horses coats. It's not that expensive and not a specialty product hard to find. Get it at your local tack shop, no problem.

I agree with the effects of flaxseed. Nutrition has soooo much to do with the health and shine of the coat. Try the flaxseed for a few months and let us know if that helps.

I think all these things are important. However, nothing beats a well rounded plan of nutrition, grooming and exercise. A happy horse is a healthy horse. A healthy horse will shine.

I agree with ShawnaJ, good nutrition, grooming and exercise.
A side effect of a dull coat (apart from the cold weather) is worms. If your horse is not on a good worming routine then get him on it.
Don't feed your horse raw flaxseed...it is toxic in that form to horses as it contains cyanide. It has to be fed in large amounts to be toxic but over time it can have an affect.
What you are looking for is the Omega 3/good fatty acids in the flaxseed so try the flaxseed oil (small amount!!) or feed 1/2 cup of sunflower seeds.
Dont feed raw flaxseed.....a shiny coat is not worth a sick/poisoned horse.
