There are so many little farms around here with beautiful horses. Why do most have a donkey, also. Do they protect? My guess is that they run off undesirables? Is that it?

Donkeys make great companions for horses just like goats.
Horses are generally herd creatures but if injured and are in isolation can get stressed being on their own. A donkey is the ideal companion.
Some people cant afford to have 2 horses to keep each other company so a donkey or goat is perfect as even though they cost and have upkeep its not as much as another horse.
Donkeys are great for many uses around horses and fun to have around :D

My grandmother had great stories of her dad letting her have the donkey to pull her cart about. That's one old picture I wish I had. On the same line, my dad had a goat for a bed. I do have the picture of the two them in the pasture with a beautiful horse in the background!
