I've wondered other people's opinions about how old a child needs to be to ride solo. Is there a pretty good age set for this? Male/Female difference?

I think it all depends on the child, the horse and where you live.

I was allowed to ride on my own when I was 13 but I lived in the country and the rule was I had to tell an adult where I was going and how long I would be and I had a very trustworthy, non spooky horse.

I still ride out on my own but I always carry a cell phone now

I was 10 . . . 200 acres of pasture and no cell phones around. I did the same though. I had to tell mom which quadrant, when I was returning, and what trails. My watch was the most important tool then.

It really depends on who you are talking about. I''ve let my 8 year old go on short rides in the pasture close by for 3 years. It gives a great sense of responsibility. Not that he knows, but I could pretty much see him at every moment. It was a great learning experience.

I was allowed to go out solo on a hirse before i was allowed to go out on a solo date! My parents said 15 was the magic number for riding. 16 for dating!
